Information on Starting a New Team
Getting your own students involved in the program is incredibly rewarding for them, and not as difficult as you might think. Our organization is filled with individuals who are excited to spread the opportunity to more institutions, and you will find a plethora of resources and helpful people to make sure your students have the best chance for success right from the start.
How Many?Summit of the Americas delegations are 4-7 students per country assigned (most universities opt for one or two countries).
IACHR Moot Court Competition delegations are 2 students each. There is no minimum number of delegations you bring. There is no maximum for IACHR, and the maximum number without office approval for the Summit is 4 delegations. Delegations are often faculty-sponsored, but can be led by a graduate assistant or student leader. We have some participating teams who are registered extracurricular organizations. |
Time Commitment Many institutions teach ESMOAS as a class for credit, but that is not a requirement to field a team. In fact, any group of 4-7 students from the same university may field a team.
The amount of time a new team invests is less than a standard class, and the work is done well before finals week. The team position paper outlines the country's position regarding each committee topic, and usually is no more than 10-12 pages. The written resolutions submitted by each delegate run one to two pages, and take about as much preparation and research time as a standard 15-20 page essay. Position papers are required for teams to be eligible for team awards, and resolutions are required for individuals to qualify for those awards, but neither is a requirement to participate, so new teams can skip this part and just come watch and learn as they go. The events are scheduled to minimize time commitment and lodging costs for working students. Summit participants will require at least one night of lodging, though 2-3 is encouraged to avoid early or late driving. IACHR Moot Court's opening preliminary rounds are held online via Zoom one week before the competition, and the IACHR tournament is held only on the Saturday of ESMOAS, unless a large number of teams need to be accommodated (at which point Friday will be added). |
Individual CommitmentRegistration fees are very low compared to other models and programs of this kind. Students are charged around $60 each for Summit of the Americas registration , and $150 each for IACHR Moot Court, both of which include some meals and all necessary materials.
The team registration fee is $100 per university (no matter how many delegations/teams you bring), and covers an extensive catalog of parliamentary training materials for unlimited use by your students. The ESMOAS Parliamentary Scrimmage and Networking Workshop is optional but highly encouraged for new teams and for new delegates. The cost is $30/student. |
